Formula One, abbreviated to F1, and currently officially referred as the FIA Formula One World Championship is the highest class of auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and is currently over half way through the 61st season. The "formula" in the name refers to a set of rules to which all participants and cars must comply. The Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, held on purpose-built circuits, and to a lesser extent, former public roads and closed city streets. The results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors. Formula One cars race at high speeds, up to 360 km/h (220 mph). The cars are capable of pulling in excess of five G-forces in some curves. Europe is Formula One's traditional centre, where all of the teams are based, and where around half the races take place. However, the sport's scope has expanded significantly in recent years and Grands Prix are held all over the world. Events in Europe and the Americas have been dropped in favour of races in Asia and the Middle East; of the eighteen races in 2008, nine were outside Europe. Formula One is a massive television event, with millions of people watching on TV each race worldwide, the Formula One Group being the legal holder of the commercial rights. As the world's most expensive sport, its economic effect is significant, and its financial and political battles are widely covered. On average about 55 million people all over the world watch Formula One races live.

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, MBE, (born in Stevenage; 7 January 1985) is a British Formula One racing driver from England, currently racing for the McLaren Mercedes team and the youngest ever Formula One World Champion. Hamilton was named after the American sprinter Carl Lewis. At the age of ten, he approached McLaren team principal, Ron Dennis, at the 1995 Autosport Awards ceremony and told him "I want to race for you one day"; less than three years later, he was signed by McLaren and Mercedes-Benz to their Young Driver Support Programme. After winning the British Formula Renault, European Formula Three and GP2 championship in 2006, he became a McLaren F1 driver for 2007, making his Formula One debut 12 years after his initial encounter with Dennis. Coming from a mixed-race background, with a black father and white mother, Hamilton is often labelled "the first black driver in Formula One". In his first season in Formula One, Hamilton set numerous rookie records and finished second in the 2007 Formula One Championship, behind Kimi Räikkönen by just one point. His first world championship was won the following season by the same margin of a single point, ahead of Felipe Massa.

Hockenheimring

The 2008 German Grand Prix (formally the LXVIII Großer Preis Santander von Deutschland) was a Formula One motor race held on July 20, 2008 at the Hockenheimring, Hockenheim, Germany. It was the 10th race of the 2008 Formula One season and was contested over 67 laps. It was won by Lewis Hamilton for the McLaren team after starting from pole position. Nelson Piquet, Jr. finished second for Renault, with Felipe Massa third for Ferrari. Hamilton maintained his startline advantage and led until he made his first pit stop on lap 18. As other cars made their pit stops, Hamilton regained the lead on lap 22. On lap 36, Timo Glock crashed, and the race was neutralized by the deployment of the safety car. Hamilton, on a two-stop strategy, did not stop to get more fuel during this period, while all the cars around him did. Thus, when he did eventually stop on lap 50, he rejoined the race in fifth position. In the closing stages of the race, Hamilton first overtook his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, then Massa, and finally Piquet, whilst also gaining a position due to Nick Heidfeld's late pit stop. This allowed him to take take the lead again on lap 60, which he maintained to win the race.
